ChaPter 13

Thursday, South Spring Street, Old Bank District, Los Angeles,

5:30 pm

My house phone rang. I took a deep breath before reaching

for it without looking at the caller ID, figuring it was probably

Claire checking up on me. As far as she was concerned, nothing

short of Armageddon could get in the way of my being ready

for a show.

“Mr. Fischer, this is Mike O’Roark from the West Hollywood

Star. I’d like to ask you a few questions—”

“What—?”

He cut me off. “I won’t keep you long, Mr. Fischer. Can you

tell me about your relationship with Russell Hunter? How long

have you known him?”

The West Hollywood Star. I’d seen it in WeHo bars and cafes.

Danny had collected every issue, mostly because they had a

weekly feature where they picked some West Hollywood hunk

and showcased his talents, which always involved a lot of skin

and oiled muscles and tight, suggestive poses. I always picked

up a copy when I was in the area. Sometimes I even read an

article or two. The writing was nothing spectacular, but it did

cater exclusively to the GBLT crowd. Something few of the

other papers in town did with any regularity.

“How long have you been dating Detective Hunter?”

My mouth went dry. I pulled the phone away from my face

and stared down at it. “What?” I whispered. “What did you say?”

“How long have you and Russell been a couple? What is it

like being involved with a member of such a rigid paramilitary

organization? Up until a few years ago there were senior people

in the LAPD who said there were no gay police officers. How

122 P.A. Brown

does that make you feel? Does Detective Hunter see himself as

a role model? Does he believe he’s changing things? What are

your thoughts on gay marriage? Did the passing of Proposition

8 anger you? Do you think the decision will hold up? What are

his—”

“I don’t know where you get your information from, but

you’re crazy—”

“So you deny you and Russell are a couple? Has he ever talked

about his friend Ronald Pelter? What does he think happened

there? Was it a tragic accident or something more sinister?”

“Leave me alone,” I snapped. “Leave us alone. I’m not talking

to you. Period. No comment.”

I slammed the phone down and when it started ringing again,

I turned it off. My voice mail kicked in, but I didn’t listen to see

if anyone left a message. Anyone on my friend list would have

my BlackBerry number.

Feeling trapped, I paced my condo. But the walls kept pressing

in on me and I knew I had to get out or risk exploding. Hunter

might be pissed, but I was going to blow up if I had to stay

inside. Everything that had been happening this week was so far

out of my experience, I didn’t know how to handle it. I just knew

I couldn’t sit still. I’d painted myself out for the time being. I

needed fresh air to clear my head so maybe I could think straight.

I’d go to a public place. How dangerous could that be?

Once again I grabbed my keys and BlackBerry and headed

out. The elevator and the garage were mercifully empty and I got

to my car without incident.
